First-timer Shoots Up to the Top
When talking about billiards(台球) in China, most people will mention snooker “Wonder Kid” Ding Junhui. But now another young star is turning heads.
Pan Xiaoting, dubbed(把……称为) the “Queen of Nine-ball” by her fans, won her first championship title at the Great Lakes Classic qualifier of the Women’s Professional Billiards Association(WPBA)(世界女子台球协会) tour last weekend.
It was the first time the 24-year-old from Shandong competed in the professional league, as financial and visa(签证) problems held her back in the past. So, as a first-time player, who is already ranked as the world No. 3, had to play qualifiers for each tournament.
Winning the qualifier gave her the right to play in the Great Lakes Classic, held from March 8-12 in Michigan City, US.
“I believe that I can win one or two tournaments along the tour,” a confident Pan said.
Her impressive track record backs up her prediction. Pan won her first championship at the Beijing Open in 1998. It was her first appearance in a major tournament. And she only began to play half a year before! ......
