On April 29, 2004, the first Tsinghua-Dumont Communication Scholarship awards ceremony was held at the School of Journalism & Communication of Tsinghua University. A total of 14 postgraduate students were awarded scholarships. The scholarships awarded included 2 Innovation Awards, 2 Academic Awards and 10 Encouragement Scholarships.
The second Tsinghua-Dumont Communication Scholarship awards ceremony was held on February 24, 2005, in the newly opened multi-media demonstration room at the School of Journalism & Communication. Seven postgraduate students won scholarships during this year’s competition. The scholarships awarded included 2 Originality Awards, 1 Comprehensive Award and 4 Encouragement Awards.
According to Yang Xiaoyu, Deputy Secretary General of the China Youth Development Foundation, and Governor of the Dumont Fund, the Tsinghua-Dumont Scholarship Program was established in December 2003 as a public welfare initiative undertaken by the China Youth Development Foundation together in partnership with Mr. Dumont. Public welfare-related projects involving youths, individuals and organizations are the focus of the Dumont Fund. The Dumont Fund provides financial support and management expertise for the Tsinghua-Dumont Communication Scholarship Program. According to the agreement between Mr. Dumont and the School of Journalism & Communication of Tsinghua University, scholarships will be awarded every year for 5 years. The goal of Tsinghua-Dumont Communication Scholarship Program is to encourage outstanding postgraduates to pursue careers in communications. The scholarship program will run until 2007.
