ABSTRACT Objective To probe deeply into the essence of non-blood vessel meridians——sympathetic sensitive lines or sympathetic substance-rich lines on the skin. Methods Macro-autoradiography was used with 125 I-tyrosine as tracer in the rat.
Results A series of sympathetic substance lines passed through the skin of the whole body were displayed, which were continuous, clear, and sym metric, and connected each other in the head and the end of limbs to form loops. When the skin on the upper of the back where the sympathetic substance lines p a ssed was cut, the effect of acupuncture at Zusanli (ST 36) was significantly blo cked, indicating that the sympathetic substance lines on the skin are conduction pathway of the acupuncture signal. Conclusion It is proved by morphology that the essence of merid ians is sympathetic substance lines.
