Practical congestion control algorithm for sensor networks

Congestion in sensor networks not only causes packet loss, but also leads to excessive energy consumption. Therefore congestion needs to be controlled in order to prolong system lifetime. This paper proposed a congestion control mechanism based on congestion state for sensor network (CMCS). Unlike existing work, CMCS innovatively measured congestion degree based on queue length and congestion increasing coefficient in intermediate nodes. CMCS utilized a bandwidth allocation strategy based on buffer increasing space and imposed a packet-discarding scheme based on packet surplus value to control congestion. The result of experiment shows that CMCS achieves efficient congestion control, as a result, it leads to higher energy efficiency and better QoS in terms of both packet loss rate and network value throughput. ......
