——An interview with Mr. Zheng Yannong, Managing Vice Chairman of China International Public Relations Association
Last year we won the right to host PR World Congress 2008. The Congress is held tri-annually. More than 3000 people attended Congress 2000 in Chicago. Since the establishment of the International Public Relations Association in 1955, the PR World Congress has been held 15 times. This June, the Congress will be held in Istanbul, Turkey, and will include a special celebration to mark the 50th anniversary of the establishment of IPRA.
We bid for PR World Congress 2008 because we wanted to expand Asia’s role in the public relations industry. The profession originated in the U.S. and Europe. As a result, the study of public relations and the formulation of standards (Athens Code) are dominated by western industrialized countries; developing countries play only a minor role. However, the public relations industry in Asia, particularly Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines and China, is expanding rapidly. The continued growth of China’s socialist market economy has created an ever-increasing demand for public relations services. A huge public relations market is taking shape in China. To support the development of the industry, we want to attract the world`s leading experts in public relations and related fields, and create opportunities to exchange ideas. PR World Congress 2008 will bring the world`s PR industry to China and raise awareness of China’s domestic PR industry and expertise internationally.
